Guan Zhongfang is the daughter of a famous physician who has lost her eyesight in an accident. While living in poverty with her maid Chuyun at Peach Blossom Alley, Guan encounters Qin Mengyu and becomes bosom friends with the young man. After Guan accepts Mengyu’s proposal of marriage, the lovers lose touch with each other during the war. Guan is taken away and cared for by GeneralQin Shuliang.
Six months later, having regained her sight, the young lady marries Shuliang; however, Shuliang has to go to battlefield before their marriage is consummated.Mengyu turns out to be Shuliang’s younger brother;Mengyu has feigned illness so that his lover could marry his elder brother. Knowing the younger brother still loves Guan, the maid Chuyun helps Guan reunite with Mengyu.
A wound Shuliang receives during combat disables him. Guan gives birth, in secret, to Mengyu’s son on the day Shuliang returns. The household is alerted to the birth by the baby’s cries. To protect Guan, Chuyunclaims that the baby is hers. Lamenting the misfortunes of his family, elder brother Shuliang moves out, taking Guan with him.
Shuliang soon discovers the affair between Guan and his younger brother. Bitter as he is, he decides to allow Guan and Mengyu to get married because of his impending death. Finally, Guan returns to Mengyuand agrees that he can take Chuyun as his concubine.
