Li Banyue is the daughter of the Prime Minister. With her maid, Chuncao, she goes to the Huashan Temple and makes an offering of incense. On the way home, Li is accosted by Wu Du, son of the Minister of Civil Service, who tries to make advances. Xue Meiting comes to her rescue but accidentally kills Wu. Xue turns himself in at the court of the prefecture.
At the court, the minister’s wife intercedes and persuades district magistrate Hu Jin to sentence Xue to execution. News reaches Chuncao, yet there is no time to take the news to Li. In a flash of genius, cleverChuncao barges into the court claiming that Xue is the son-in-law of the Prime Minister. Bowing to the higher power, Hu pardons Xue. Indignant, Hu visits the Prime Minister's mansion to verify the case with Li. With her trick, Chuncao allows Li to give tacit consent to the marriage and makes the prime minister recognize Xue as his son-in-law in the presence of other officials. In the end, the prime minister expels Hufrom his residence and accepts Xue as his son-in-law.
